Fiat – the Italian tractor that became part of CNH

Fiat tractors are a significant part of European agricultural history. Although the Fiat logo disappeared from tractor hoods over 20 years ago, thousands of such machines still operate in Polish farms, primarily from the popular 66 and 90 series. Farmers appreciate them for their simple construction, economical engines, and the fact that they can be repaired in their own workshops.

From the first tractor to market power

The history of Fiat tractors began just after World War I. In 1918, the Turin company presented the Fiat 702, its first agricultural tractor. It was one of the first serially produced tractors in Italy, and its success made agriculture an important direction for Fiat's development.

In 1932, the Fiat 700C was introduced, the brand's first crawler tractor. This initiated Fiat's tradition of crawlers, which were eagerly used in vineyards and on slopes. After World War II, production accelerated significantly. Fiat built increasingly modern wheeled tractors, and eventually also four-wheel drive models and narrow tractors for orchards and vineyards, where it was a leader for many years.

Fiatagri and expansion

In the 1970s and 80s, Fiat grew through acquisitions, including the American company Hesston, a manufacturer of balers and forage machines. The agricultural division operated under the name Fiatagri. During this period, tractors that Polish farmers know well were created:

• 66 series, e.g., 60-66, 70-66, 80-66: simple, strong, and reliable medium-power tractors, very popular in Poland,

• 90 series, e.g., 80-90, 82-94, 88-94: more modern, with better cabins and more comfortable gear shifting,

• Winner: higher power tractors with richer equipment,

• M and G series: the most powerful Fiat tractors from the 90s.

Most of them have Fiat series 8000 engines, valued for their durability and easy access to parts.

From Fiat to New Holland and CNH

In 1991, Fiat acquired the majority of shares in Ford New Holland, the agricultural part of the Ford group. The merged companies operated under the New Holland banner, and Fiat tractors gradually transitioned to this brand. In 1999, New Holland merged with the American Case Corporation, forming the CNH group, now CNH Industrial. This is one of the largest manufacturers of agricultural machinery in the world, with the brands New Holland, Case IH, and Steyr.

The last tractors with the Fiat logo rolled off the assembly line at the turn of the century. However, their designs lived on. Many later New Holland tractors, e.g., from the L, TL, or TN series, directly descend from Fiats and share many components with them.
